The democratic journey toward Nigeria’s 2027 general elections is already generating predictable political maneuvers. Following the recent routine personnel adjustments within the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and other narrow-minded interests have launched a wave of unsubstantiated rhetoric. They allege ethnically motivated postings, targeting strategic departments. However, a dispassionate look at the facts reveals these claims to be completely unfounded; a deliberate attempt to paint the commission in a bad light and pre-emptively stain the integrity of the upcoming polls.

At the center of these routine redeployments is the highly commendable appointment of Mrs. Oluyemi Titilayo Adeyemi-Showunmi to head the vital Electoral Operations and Voter Registry Department. For an institution tasked with managing the complex logistics of a national election, putting its best foot forward is not just ideal; it is a necessity.

Mrs. Adeyemi-Showunmi is a thoroughbred insider who has steadily risen through the administrative ranks of the commission. Her vast institutional memory, expertise, competencies and decorated experience most notably demonstrated during her career trajectory till date make her uniquely qualified for this national assignment.

Throughout her decades of public service, she has earned a reputation for maintaining a fiercely firm, unbiased, and transparent disposition under pressure. Rather than criticizing this administrative masterstroke, the INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan deserves deep commendation for prioritizing field-tested capability over political correctness. This posting is rooted purely in professionalism, merit, and standard INEC procedures, designed specifically to boost the manpower capacity of the commission to deliver seamless, transparent elections.

To sustain their narrative, critics have attempted to drag the presidency into routine civil service matters. It is democratically unfair and deeply mischievous to associate President Bola Ahmed Tinubu with these internal deployments.

The President has consistently shown himself to be a staunch democrat and a strong advocate for robust electoral democracy. As an incumbent who will also be on the ballot in 2027, weaponizing standard administrative adjustments to attack his democratic credentials creates unnecessary collateral damage to the presidency and the nation’s stability. In fact, the Federal Government deserves praise for its absolute non-intervention in INEC’s internal affairs, allowing the electoral umpire to function as an independent, autonomous body.

Nigeria cannot afford to sacrifice competence on the altar of regional blackmail or cheap political point-scoring.

Opposition actors must learn to separate routine organizational optimizations from partisan politics.

The appointment of Mrs. Adeyemi-Showunmi is, therefore, a right step in the right direction. We congratulate her on this well-deserved national elevation and wish her the very best as she deploys her vast experience to safeguard the sacred votes of all Nigerians.
