Floyd Mayweather faces charges over alleged watch theft, $200k check fraud

Former boxing champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. is facing two felony charges in Las Vegas over allegations that he issued a $200,000 check without sufficient funds to purchase a luxury watch from a high-end resale store.

According to court records, the 49-year-old Mayweather was charged in April with theft and drawing and passing a check without sufficient funds with intent to defraud. Prosecutors in Clark County, Nevada, allege that the retired boxer wrote the check in December 2024 through Wells Fargo to luxury resale retailer Gold and Beyond despite not having enough money in the account to cover the transaction.

Mayweather was scheduled to make an initial appearance in Las Vegas Justice Court on Monday, but an attorney appeared on his behalf. The court has scheduled the next hearing in the case for September.

According to CNN, neither Mayweather’s attorney nor his representatives immediately responded to requests for comment regarding the allegations.

The criminal case adds to a series of legal disputes involving the former five-division world champion.

Earlier this year, Mayweather was sued in New York over allegations that he failed to pay rent on a Manhattan apartment. He has also been involved in financial disagreements with several jewelers and filed a separate lawsuit against a former business manager, alleging a long-running fraud scheme.

Despite the legal challenges, Mayweather recently announced plans to return to competitive boxing. The undefeated former champion had been scheduled to participate in the “Battle of the Legends” event in Athens on June 27 and previously confirmed his involvement in the exhibition bout.

Mayweather remains one of boxing’s most recognisable figures, having retired with an unbeaten professional record and world titles across five weight divisions. The outcome of the Nevada case could have significant legal and financial implications for the boxing star if prosecutors secure a conviction.
